Summary: | Three research projects were conducted over a three year period among secondary school students in the United Kingdom, the United States (Virginia), and West Germany in order to determine students' understanding the 40-year confrontation between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Warsaw Pact. These studies included 1991 students and 136 secondary school staff members and focused on the students' general knowledge levels concerning these organizations' histories and their attitudes toward these alliances. Chapter 1 provides a literature review, and chapter 2 briefly describes the United Kingdom study. Chapters 3 and 4 discuss the Virginia and West Germany studies in detail, while chapter 5 suggests some educational implications of and recommendations from the study. Findings indicate that: (1) students' knowledge of modern history is directly related to the extent to which topics are linked to current events and controversies; (2) students at upper secondary school levels can be stimulated to critically study controversial issues; (3) most students, who are taught using a chronological approach, have little knowledge about this topic; and (4) student knowledge levels about this topic might increase if the topic were taught by using a current events and issues approach. Tables are included. (Author/JHP) |
