520 |a What Hans Christian Andersen and the Grimm brothers achieved by collecting stories from the common people that had been handed down orally from generation to generation is also achieved in this collection of folktales consisting of 45 fables and 65 tales and short stories. This publication, addressed to educators, anthropologists, and specialists in Mongolian studies, offers cross-cultural studies and can be used in the classroom by discussing the Mongolian world of thought and ideas expressed in these stories and fables. The study and discussion of these folktales provides an initial step to awaken interest in today's Mongolian people and their different ways of living. These tales contain the Inner Asian sense of humor and sarcasm, and many of the fables are a discussion of how animals received certain attributes or are about family relations. The volume is illustrated with photographs. (SM)
