| 520 | |a Unit 1 of the six-unit Indiana state history series designed to be taught in Indiana secondary schools spans the period from the mid-1600s to 1880. Each of the three chapters is divided into short sections covering a topic in history, and questions at the end of the section reinforce learning. A timeline for each chapter is also provided. The formation of the land through glacial activity and the establishment of boundaries are described in the introductory section. Chapter 1 deals with the early settlement of Indiana. It looks at the personalities which arose from the conditions and demands of the times and examines the important governmental decisions and treaties with the Indians. Illustrations, personal profiles, and anecdotes are included to give the student a clearer picture of what life was like in territorial Indiana. Chapter 2 moves Indiana from territorial status to statehood. Major legislative acts passed by the U.S. Congress, which directly affected Indiana's quest for statehood, are put in chronological order. Chapter 3 covers the period from 1820 to 1850 in which the state capital was relocated from Vincennes to Indianapolis. The chapter also takes a look at early social experiments such as the New Harmony Commune. The major preoccupation with canal building and early roads and railroads is emphasized.
