| Summary: | The purpose of this book is to examine current conditions for art education (what is) and ask the reader to think about what ought to be. By blending history, theory, and practice, the author attempts to provide a multifaceted model for art teachers to use as a starting point in their efforts to improve art education as we prepare to enter the 21st century. Section 1, "Setting the Stage: Exploring Issues," establishes the developing role of curriculum in the field of art education. Chapter 1 makes the case for having a written, sequential, cumulative, and well articulated curriculum in art. Chapter 2 lays out the basic elements or components of an art curriculum. Chapter 3 provides a selected look at the theories that contributed most heavily to art's curricular roots. Section 2,"Approaches that Work", defines the components of successful approaches to art curricula construction. Chapter 4 gives an analysis of a traditional child-centered creative self-expressive approach. Chapter 5 examines a social adaption/social reconstruction model and an integrated arts model. This section concludes with chapter 6's look at a multifaceted, cognitive development model, an academic rationalism model, a curriculum as technology model, and finally, the amalgamated curriculum approach. Section 3, "Some Examples for Consideration," is devoted to translating theory into practice. Chapter 7 provides a curriculum framework based on the amalgamated-curriculum model. Chapter 8 describes the process involved in creating the district level art curriculum. Chapter 9 deals with assessment and evaluation. Appendix A includes useful charts for designing the curriculum.
