Summary:This book is the leader handbook of the American Camping Association's (Indiana) Outdoor Living Skills Program. The purpose of this program is the development of outdoor living skills that emphasize environmental values. The program is divided into five levels and participants can enter at any point depending on their maturity and existing camping skills. The book covers the following topics: (1) an introduction to outdoor activities and outdoor-living skills; (2) leadership strategies that address individual and group differences; (3) the practice of minimum-impact camping, development of a risk management plan, and choosing appropriate equipment; (4) safety rules related to weather, drinking water, sanitation, and first-aid; (5) perspectives and strategies for exploring and understanding nature, basic ecological concepts, and related learning activities; (6) cooking methods and meal planning/preparation including recipes; (7) instructions for 13 common knots and hitches used in camping; (8) camping tools for outdoor living, cooking, and eating; and (9) the appropriate use of maps and compasses. The sections specify the skill requirements for each level of the Outdoor Living Skills Program. The book contains a bibliography related to outdoor living skills and numerous illustrations. (LP)
