Description
Summary:A national survey of 1,606 adults was conducted in September 1998 covering a broad range of topics, including politics, education, social security, devolution, health care, the environment, and deregulation. The survey had 2 components: a sample of 850 adults from the national population, including 94 African Americans, and a separate sample of 850 African Americans. This report presents findings on education. Three areas of education received special focus in the survey: educational quality; school spending; and vouchers. The 1998 report shows some interesting changes from 1997. African Americans expressed greater satisfaction with their schools than they did in 1997, and their attitudes were more like those of the general population in 1998. There was a significant decline in support for school vouchers in both the black and general populations. A strong majority of respondents thought that too little is being spent on education, although this view was more strongly held among blacks (76.4%) than whites (59.7%). A note explains survey methodology. Contains 7 tables of polling data. (SLD)
