| Summary: | This paper addresses the "graying of faculty," faculty recruitment and retention, roles and responsibilities, evaluation, professionalism, and issues related to part-time faculty. The student body of today's community colleges is tremendously diverse, making the recruitment and retention of new faculty even more complicated. As approximately three-quarters of full-time community college faculty will retire within the next twenty years, community colleges will have to be creative in recruiting a pool of applicants that will best serve the diverse population. The traditional source of community college faculty used to be the secondary school sector, but this is no longer the case. The hallmark of community college faculty is the commitment to teaching all students, in particular, students who would not otherwise have access to higher education. Teachers who engage students should be rewarded, and the tendency to hire part-time faculty should be curbed, focusing instead on the development of full-time faculty. (Contains 37 references.)
