Summary:This report, first of a projected annual series, focuses on the key commitments of the mission statement of the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and highlights new Commission initiatives. The issue opens with two essays related to the Commission's purposes: "Serving the Common Good in a Diverse Society" by Charlie Nelms and "Serving the Common Good: Consultant-Evaluators in the Heart of Peer Review" by Steven D. Crow. A collaborative visit profile describes online programs at North Dakota State University. Profiles are also provided of three institutions (Concordia University, Crowder College, and Fort Hays State University) that are partners in the Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP). Partner profiles are presented for Northland College and Minnesota State CollegeSoutheast Central as participants in the Joint Commission/American Association for Higher Education assessment workshops. A final partner profile describes the linking of AQIP and assessment at Kent State University. (SLD)
