520 |a The Lansing Area Manufacturing Partnership (LAMP) is an academically rigorous, business/labor-driven school-to-career program in Lansing, Michigan, that includes business, union, school, and parent partners. The effects of participation in LAMP on transitions from school to higher education and work were examined in a longitudinal study that compared the progress of LAMP students and non-LAMP participants from the classes of 1998, 1999, and 2000 at more than 20 high schools. Changes in educational and employment status were tracked through mailed surveys administered every June and December. The LAMP students pursued postsecondary education at higher rates than the comparison groups did. As a group, the LAMP students were maintaining good grades and a significant majority were working and attending school at the same time. Compared to the non-LAMP participants, the LAMP students participated in more career development activities during their senior year in high school and appeared to have been better prepared for the transition from high school to college and employment. Many LAMP graduates were initially dissatisfied with their jobs, particularly with their opportunities for training and advancement, and they have changed jobs at higher rates than the comparison group. However, many LAMP graduates considered their job changes positive steps toward their career goals. (Contains 10 figures.) (MN)
