Anti-tuberculosis drug resistance in the world : report / The World Health Organization/International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (WHO/UNION) Global Project on Anti-Tuberculosis Drug Resistance Surveillance.

Drug resistance is a potential threat to the standard international method of TB control: the DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course) strategy. In 1994, WHO embarked on the project to discover the extent of that threat. At that time, the available information suggested that levels of resist...

In 1994, WHO embarked on the project to discover the extent of that threat. At that time, the available information suggested that levels of resistance may have been increasing in some settings, but methodological limitations prevented an adequate assessment of the extent of the problem throughout the world and precluded meaningful comparisons between different countries. This report provides results of the survey conducted in dozens of countries/geographical settings by WHO and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Global Project. The aim of the Project is to collect standardized, reliable and comparable worldwide information on drug resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis--bacteriological methods, ecological analysis, demographics, patients, health, new cases, previously treated cases, anti-tuberculosis therapy.
