Summary: | A history of the Jews in the diaspora from 175 BCE to the beginning of the 20th century. Traces the history of European Jewry from the roots of Christian antisemitism, dealing with the Crusades, the Black Death, the Inquisition, the ghettos of medieval Europe and their influence on the Haskalah movement (moving out of the ghetto), the ideological debate following various antisemitic events during the 19th century (such as the Damascus blood libel, the Mortara and Dreyfus Affairs) and, finally, the evolution of Eastern European antisemitism. This culminated in the pogroms which inspired the creation of the mass emigration, and the Bundist and Zionist movements. These would subsequently seal the fate of European Jewry in the 20th century. |
