520 |a This book provides complete coverage of surface and subsurface drainage of all types of pavements for highways, urban roads, parking lots, airports, and container terminals. It provides up-to-date information on the principles and technologies for designing and building drainage systems and examines numerous issues, including maintenance and designing for flood events. Practical considerations and sophisticated analysis, such the use of the finite element method and unsaturated soil mechanics, anisotropy and uncertainties, are presented. This book allows civil engineers to make the best use of their resources to provide cost effective and sustainable pavements. Features Presents a holistic consideration of drainage with respect to pavement performance. Includes numerous practical case studies. Examines flooding and the impacts of climate change. Includes PowerPoint slides which include quizzes, schematics, figures, and tables.
545 0 |a Prof. G L Sivakumar Babu is a professor of Civil Engineering, also serves as Chairman, Centre for Continuing Education, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He worked in Central Road Research Institute, Airports Authority of India and was a member of the Highway Research Board of Indian Roads Congress, and is associated with development of codes for pavement design. He works extensively on reliability and risk assessment of civil engineering systems, ground improvement, geosynthetics, and sustainability. He is currently the President, Indian Geotechnical Society. He is also the Governor for ASCE Region 10. He has contributed significantly in internationally and published about 250 papers in the area. He is the Chairman of Technical Committee on Forensic Geotechnical Engineering of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He is recipient of many awards and distinctions nationally and internationally. Prof. Prithvi Singh Kandhal is Associate Director Emeritus of the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) based at Auburn University, Alabama. NCAT is the largest asphalt road technology center in the world. Prior to joining NCAT in 1988, he served as Chief Asphalt Road Engineer of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for 17 years. He has held three national and international prestigious positions: President, Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (with members from around the world); Chairman, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Committee on Road Paving Standards (responsible for over 200 standards used worldwide); and Chairman, US Transportation Research Board Committee on Asphalt Roads. Prof. Kandhal has published over 120 technical papers and has coauthored the first ever textbook on asphalt road technology. In 2011, he was inducted on the "Wall of Honour" established at the largest asphalt road research center in the United States. In April 2012, he was made honorary member of the International Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists. Dr. Nivedya Madankara Kottayiheld a post-doctoral position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Massachusetts. Prior joining WPI, she held both a post-doctoral research fellowship and a graduate research assistantship at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India. She works on the mechanical characterization of bitumen stabilized mixtures which consist of reclaimed asphalt material and foamed asphalt. Since joining WPI she has expanded her research to include moisture damage of asphalt mixtures, drainage characteristics and finite element analysis of pavements under extreme climatic conditions, nanoscale measurements ofasphalt withantistripping additives, and application of artificial intelligence in pavement engineering. Dr. Rajib B. Mallick is a graduate of Jadavpur University, India, and has worked as a research assistant and as a senior research associate at the National Center for Asphalt Technology, Auburn University. He is currently the Ralph White Family Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He has coauthored more than 100 papers for journals and conference proceedings, as well as several practical reports, manuals, and state-of-the-practice reports for federal, state, and local highway agencies. He has taught professional courses on asphalt technology, presented courses on recycling for the FHWA, as well as lectured in the national workshops at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Madras in India. He is a member of several professional organizations and a registered professional engineer (PE) in Massachusetts. He has served as a consultant in several projects for practitioner organizations, worked at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka as a Fulbright Fellow and has served IIT Madras as a professor of civil engineering for one year. Dr. A. Veeraragavan is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras. He has over 38 years of experience in teaching, research and industrial consultancy. He received several awards from the Indian Roads Congress for his best and highly commended research papers. . He is a recipient of the UGC Career Award for young teacher and National Award for Promising Engineering College Teacher in India, as well as the Viswakarma Award for Outstanding Academician/Technologist/Researcher/Innovator from the Construction Industry Development Council. He has published over 100 research papers in journals and 150 papers in International conference proceedings. He is an author of books on Surveying, Highway Engineering and Highway Materials and Pavement Testing. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and a Fellow of the International Society for Engineering Asset Management. He is a member of the Highway Research Board, IRC Committees on Specifications and Standards, Flexible Pavements, Composite Pavements, and Road Maintenance and Asset Management.
