Summary: | The translations of the Bible into French - partial or complete, literal or transposed - mark a turning point in the history of one of the founding texts of the West. Not only does the Holy Book participate in the enrichment of a developing language, but it also enters the stage of literary and social history by creating new derived texts that are as much human appropriations of the divine word. From the book to the books, from the scripture to its second rewritings, this is the space that this book intends to explore in a given conjuncture - the Middle Ages and the Renaissance - at a time when the French language is being formed, where is developing a literature and where a society is constituted. The first part, "The language of the Bible," discusses the history of translations from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance with particular reference to its sociolinguistic issues. The second part, "Bible and Literature", is interested in the rewritings poetic, romantic and theatrical as well as the aesthetic reflections that the Sacred Book has raised following the periods considered. Finally, the third part, "Bible and history", questions the role played by Scripture in the conception of a thought and a poetics of the history of the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.--Translation by Droz. |
